Welcome to USWIM's Blog!

Let's start off by saying a bit about USWIM. USWIM is the Undergraduate Society of Women in Mathematics, and we are a student group at MIT building an academic and social community for undergraduate women in the math department (of course, we welcome men and non-math majors just the same).

In the past, we have held a wide variety of events. In the fall, we held a math mixer to welcome the freshmen, welcome back the sophomores, and tell all of them about the introductory math courses that MIT has to offer. They hear from the TAs* that have taught and are teaching these classes, as well as the upperclassmen who took them. Our Math in Industries event hosted company representatives to come speak about the applications of math in industry and career opportunities. Similarly, we invite seniors and graduate students to talk on our panel for students looking to pursue graduate school or academia.

If you'd like to know more about USWIM, please visit our booth at the Activities Midway! It will take place on Friday, September 2nd, from 4pm to 6:30 pm. Also, feel free to email us at swim-exec@mit.edu; we'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for reading our blog, and we hope to see you at orientation!

* TAs are teaching assistants. They are graduate students (usually) who teach recitations and help grade, whereas the professor teaches lecture and assigns final grades.
