Math Prize for Girls + USWIM Info-session

Here's an update on what USWIM has been up to in the last couple of months!

We continued in our tradition of helping out at the Math Prize for Girls! The 5th annual contest took place on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at MIT with 276 girls from across the US and Canada. The USWIM members helped out with whatever needed to get done, which mostly included logistics and event preparation. For the first time ever, our very own Allison Koeneke (President of USWIM exec) gave a speech as the 2013 Alumnae speaker :) (For those interested, check out her funny and inspiring speech about competition math at: http://mathprizeforgirlscommunity.blogspot.com/2013/09/2013-alumna-speaker-allison-koenecke.html) Congratulations to all the girls for doing a wonderful job!!

USWIM also presented the amazing....

a delicious Thai dinner + bubble tea will be served!

We served a delicious Thai dinner and bubble tea while speaking to the MIT undergrads about our organization. For those of you who are not familiar with USWIM, we are a group of women who are interested in mathematics and come together for different types of events, from career-oriented to class focused for the MIT community. After the event we received many great applications for the USWIM exec board, and interviews will be held in the next couple of weeks. I look forward to meeting the new potential exec members who will continue to make USWIM awesome :D

SUMiT 2013

SUMiT 2013!

Girls' Angle and MIT's Undergraduate Society of Women in Mathematics (USWIM) collaborated to bring the second SUMiT event on January 26, 2013!
Last year, SUMiT 2012 took place on January 21, 2012 with a great (10 out of 10!) overall rating from participants.
This year 32 girls in 6-10th grade came together from as far as Virginia and California to participate in a themed hunt.
I agree with Christie, who blogged about last year's event, that this event is different from the AMC/AIME/other math competition I participated in during High School.
SUMiT is different from every other math extracurricular event in the United States in that it brings together young women of various different math backgrounds for a collaborative rather than competitive event.
As a volunteer, I had a lot of fun solving math problems with bright young women :)
